General Pet Wellness at Lisner Animal Hospital

Pet wellness exams and general checkups are a key part of keeping your pet healthy and happy.
Whether you have a new pet or just haven't been to the vet in a while, it's time to make an appointment to see your local Commerce Township veterinarian at Lisner Animal Hospital.

When Does My Pet Need a Wellness Exam?

As a baseline, Lisner Animal Hospital recommends that a healthy, adult animal should have a wellness exam annually. It is a good idea to bring your pet in once a year for a general veterinary wellness exam.

Puppies, kittens, and other young animals need more frequent care. With young pets, you will need multiple appointments within the year to keep them up-to-date on vaccinations and to monitor their growth. As your young pet grows, we may make recommendations for when to spay/neuter them. All of this generally falls within the early phases of their life.

Wellness exams may get more specialized and individual as your pet ages or if they become ill. Our team can help recommend a more patient-specific wellness exam schedule at that time.

What Do I Bring to My Pet's First Wellness Exam?

If it is your first time at Lisner Animal Hospital, we ask that you arrive a bit early (about 10-15 minutes) to complete some quick intake forms. These will be given to you by our wonderful front desk staff.

If your pet is on medication, we ask that you bring a full list of the medication names, doses, and frequency. We also ask that you bring any previous veterinary notes, a history of veterinary visits, and a list of any hospital procedures that your pet has had. We love if you can bring a note of your pet's current food and treat brands. This helps us evaluate dietary needs.

For the safety of your pet and others, we ask that you bring your pet in on a leash or in a crate until taken to a private room.

When scheduling an appointment with us, let our staff know the age and overall health status of your pet. This helps us prepare for your visit. In some cases (usually with young or ill pets) we will ask you to bring in a stool sample when you come for the exam.

What Happens During a General Wellness Exam?

As Lisner Animal Hospital, our first step is to get to know you and your pet. Depending on the pet, a trip to the veterinary office can sometimes have them feeling a bit shy. We like to start our visits with an introduction to your pet to help make them feel more safe and comfortable.

Then, we will make note of your pet's health, habits, behaviors, and routines. This includes details surrounding exercise, behavior traits, temperament. bowel movements, diet, or any other concerns you may have. During this, your pet has more time to relax while you get to know our veterinarians better!

Next comes the physical exam! We do a full-body exam, paying close attention to your pet's eyes, ears, nose, mouth, teeth, coat, and skin. This helps us spot any potential signs of illness. If we notice any warning signs here, we may proceed to more in-depth exams or tests to help us tend to the issue. If your pet looks healthy, we will focus on how we can best ensure that he/she stays healthy. This includes common preventative medicine such as vaccinations and parasite control for fleas, ticks, heartworms, etc. Sometimes, there is also a need for non-medical health control such as weight management, dental hygiene, skin care, or tips for healthier fur.

What Patients Are Saying About Us
I needed a second opinion on euthanizing my 14-year-old dog, though I am not ready to leave my regular vet. They saw us right away and agreed to share info with my regular vet. Dr Alex was very professional and answered all my questions. I am even considering Walnut Lake for future visits with my other pets!
Dr. G was not only able to. get us in so quickly but was able to see the pain our pet was in and offered to do the surgery same day, we have never seen such a compassionate vet & clinic! I cant say good enough things about Dr. G and the way he is taking care of our collie!
I found 2 stray kittens that were abandoned near our house one night during my walk. These little guys were skin and bones. It was nearly closing time when I called Walnut Lake Animal Hospital and they didn't hesitate for a single second to stay open past work hours to look at the kittens. The Vet and his staff were so kind and generous with their time and services. I definitely recommend this Veterinary practice to anyone who has pets, or is looking for a reliable and trustworthy veterinarian!
